Narrative Dynamics — A Cognitive Energy Framework
A redefinition of narrative as the spatiotemporal design of cognitive energy. Same five-dimensional measurement applies across text, music, dance, education, art, architecture, and UI.
The redefinition
Narrative = the spatiotemporal design of cognitive energy.
A sender deliberately allocates a receiver’s cognitive resources (attention, expectation, fatigue) along a time or space axis to focus them at intended points and produce meaning.
The traditional definition of narrative — characters undergoing events — was made to describe novels and drama. Yet the same patterns govern Beethoven’s Fifth, the silence held after a tango ends, a YouTube retention curve, an architecture that draws the eye to a single altar. Different materials, the same underlying movement.
The three laws
- Opening — Narrative begins by creating a cognitive blank. Without a blank, there is no reason to stay.
- Sustaining — A blank closed too quickly loses tension; held too long causes fatigue. The skill is in managing the blank’s lifespan.
- Resolution and resonance — Catharsis is not the moment the blank closes. It is the time spent savoring it after.
Five dimensions
| Dimension | Symbol | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Information density | Cognitive load per unit time | |
| Trigger | Immediate arousal stimuli | |
| Potential energy | Size of the open blank | |
| Cohesion | Adhesive strength holding the blank | |
| Cumulative fatigue | Distance to disengagement |
Cumulative fatigue follows:
The same formula governs text, music, video, and education.
Why it matters
This framework allows narrative to be measured, diagnosed, and redesigned across media. It connects what was previously thought to be separate disciplines:
- A novelist’s craft of suspension
- A composer’s manipulation of dissonance
- A teacher’s design of cognitive gaps
- A designer’s leading lines and focal points
These are not analogies. They are the same operation, projected onto different materials.
